Journal 9 NETS-T 5

Cifuentes, L., Merchant, Z., & Vural, O.F. (2010). Save the world with web 2.0. Learning and Leading with Technology, 38(3), Retrieved from http://www.iste.org/learn/publications/learning-and-leading/digital-edition-november.aspx

Summary
This article addresses some of the benefits of using web 2.0 tools. Web 2.0 tools are new to this generation of students as ways of finding answers to just about anything. Web 2.0 tools allow students to find tools to either create their own web tool to find answers to their questions. The article talked about specific web 2.0 tools that are now available to students and talks about how these tools help students in and out of the classroom. It also talks about the importance of students using web 2.0 tools to have access to other people, places, and events in the world. Today, it is more important than ever that students are able to connect, communicate and compete on an international level. Web 2.0 tools allow them the access to do this in real time.
How could creating a class wiki as a web 2.0 tool help the classroom?
Creating a class wiki for my students would allow me to give the students a list of developed tools to create their own projects. Creating a class wiki would allow me as an instructor to see how they play out concepts to make sure they understanding the concepts. Also, by using a wiki it is a fun way to assess the students and or a fun way for them to spend extra time on the concept without them thinking they are doing time draining homework assignments. More than ever I think it is important to keep students interested in what they are learning and that they learn in ways that are supportive of their digital lifestyle.

How can I make sure web 2.0 sites are safe for my students?
One thing that scared me personally about the internet is safety. As a future educator either in the classroom or in speech therapy internet safety is very important to me. If I were to create an interactive wiki for my students to use then I would make sure that I checked out every website first. I would also ask for parental permission and or assistance when students used the wiki. I think it is important to use technology in the classroom and for students but it has to be safe.

Frey, T. J., Houlton, A. L., & Gruis, E. D. (2010). I can see me: webcams in the classroom. Learning and Leading with Technology, 38(3), Retrieved from http:///www.iste.org/LL

Summary
This article talks about the use of web cams in the classroom. This article discussed students reading into the web cam and then watching the videos of themselves reading. This seems like a great way for students to hear the mistakes they are reading. This is also a great way for students to read out loud without being nervous about messing up in front of their peers and teacher. Also, this is a great way for students to get evaluated and helped one student at a time.

How could this be beneficial to speech therapy students?
I am interested in going into the field of speech therapy. I think that using web cams would be a great way for students to hear the mistakes they are making. Also, if I could do the session with them then they would be able to have a correct example as well as their own. Also, with the video those students who had problems with physical errors then they may be able to see where they are actually making the mistake.

How could parents get involved using web cams?
Parents could take a very important role in the use of web cams with their students. If parents were able to assist their students at home using this web cam reading method at home, it would be great practice for the children. Parents could help the children recognize their mistakes and also recognize their successes. If parents were able to take the time and practice with their children that extra help outside the classroom could make a huge change in the child's level of confidence. There are so many shy children who would appreciate the help at home in a place where they feel comfortable and not threatened by other children.

My Professional Learning Network

What is my PLN:
My PLN is my professional learning network. It is something that is web based (in the cloud) and is a resource I am creating by using tools that interest me and that I find helpful. By creating a web based PLN as a future teacher I will be able to access any of my tools anywhere I am, and I will so be able to share it easily with other people, teachers, parents, students and peers. Creating my PLN is something that I can constantly change and upgrade but it is a great place to start connecting with other teaching and educational professionals. Having a PLN is a great way to get ideas and resources from other people that have been working with kids for a while and also with people who are new to the field that may have fresh ideas. Having a digital PLN gives me the ability to learn about new resources and ask questions from people across the world. It is one of the best resources to have and update because it is such an accessible tool and will be so helpful when I join the professional field.

Twitter:
The people I am following on twitter now are

  • calisafe
    • A site for CA safe schools. Has interesting little topics that discuss school safety
  • NatGeoSociety
    • The National Geographic twitter account. I think it may have interesting updates and postings and is a great resource for fun information about things in nature.
  • usedgov
    • US department of education. This will be helpful as a national source of information on education
  • MrWejr
    • He's a high school principal, a great resource as someone who is in the field and may have great ideas and updates for educators.
  • jheil65
    • A wonderful twitter resource. Constantly giving updates for informational resources and interesting tools for educators.
  • aba_behaviour
    • speech therapy plus. I am interested in becoming a speech therapist so I thought this would be a great resource eventually.
On Twitter I followed the #edchat, for Tuesday November 2,2010 at 4 pm. The topic was about if teachers' observations should be more subjective. I think this is a great topic. There are teachers that need to remember how they are testing us, and it would be helpful if they took their own tests. Sometimes teachers present material in a way that is not testable. Teachers who for example show personal images or silent videos may believe they are giving students a break from lecture, but they then give a subjective test on information never presented.
Within the discuss someone responded posing another question asking if students are ever involved in pre and post observation meetings. This is something I would love to be involved in for some professors. There are professors that are horrible, just horrible that need to be pointed out and have a discussion. I have had horrible professors I have complained about at lengths only to discover they are chair of their department and therefore quite difficult to report. There are also professors who may be average teachers but their support and help outside the classroom in office hours and through helpful emails is where they need to be recognized and observed. These teachers spend timeless hours and bend over backwards to make the student understand the material. They should be recognized by their students.
Delicious:
The people I have added to my delicious network are
  • Dan Serrato
  • Dr. William Bauer
  • Jefferey
  • Mark Wagner, Ph.D
  • Robert Petkus
  • Will Richardson
Many of the people I have decided to have in my delicious network are people that I recognize that consistently post bookmarks for educational sites and tools. Many of these delicious users also have their own blogs and or wiki's where that present information, talk about their tools and resources they find helpful and also they discuss topics that interest them. I am not sure who all these people are, what they do, or where they live but I am eager to use their tools and resources to add to my PLN.
Some of the things I tagged in delicious were
  • USGS Education-US Geologic Survey, information and resources with maps etc.
  • ERIC- Education Resources Information Center
  • US Department of Education
  • EDU Blogs
  • Kathy Schrock's ed tech blogs
I joinged Classroom 2.0. This website has so much information! I was looking at Steve Hargadon's blog. He is one of the people who started classroom 2.0 he also has connections with blackboard, he is on the chair for the global education conference, and many other things. His blog isn't about current topics, it is more an informative schedule of events and interviews taking place through classroom 2.0. I read a blog post by a man who is concerned about the future of text books. He was curious as to what is going to happen with them because history is happening so fast, will the old history be less relevant, and second will it all be digital. I thought it was an interesting question. I personally dislike reading on the computer. I don't feel like I comprehend the material as well if I can't physically read and take notes on the page. I also would understand though that if students start at a young age in elementary school and begin reading on a computer then they may be used to it and find it easier, less material to carry around, have internet access to it wherever they want etc.

Digital Discussion Forum:
I joined classroom 2.0.

Summary
This was an interview with Will Richardson, a former educator and now a education technology consultant who speaks about the importance of technology in the field of education. Richardson makes it his job to promote technology usage and information in the classroom to aid education. Richardson finds it important to provide and discuss resources that will aid in the learning process rather than factual information students memorize for tests. This is a large quote from the interview but I think he puts it very nicely,
"I think we need to focus more on developing the learning process—looking at how kids collaborate with others on a problem, how they exercise their critical thinking skills, how they handle failure, and how they create. We have to be willing to put kids—and assess kids—in situations and contexts where they’re really solving problems and we’re looking not so much at the answer but the process by which they try to solve those problems. Because those are the types of skills they’re going to need when they leave us, when they go to college or wherever else. At least I think so. And I don’t think I’m alone in that." I think this is a great way to put it and I strongly agree with him. Two other things Richardson discusses that I think are important concepts to discuss are G-Portfolios and students starting PLN's at a younger age.

How will the "G-Portfolio" help my future students?
Richardson calls G-Portfolios the ability for teachers to teach students how to have strong and appropriate search portfolios. Students need to be able to go on the internet, search something and find credible sources that fit their learning style, level or reading, and will be able to help them. As a future educator it is important to me that I know only help my students learn how to be strong and appropriate researchers but to aid my students in using internet resources as a means to find answers. As a student now I know how important and intimidating internet sources can be because it is all changing so quickly. But that also makes me realize how helpful and informative these new resources are.

What is the importance of students starting a PLN early in their education?
If I am able to help my future students create PLNs early in their education they will have a greater amount of resources to fall back on in all fields of their education. As a student in today's society creating a PLN allows me to find educators and other important people and or institutions and i am then able to follow them on things like twitter and delicious, google blogs etc. Being able to use these people as resources is something that was nearly impossible 10 years ago. I am able to follow and receive resources from teachers in other countries, principals, political figures, organization presidents etc. Some of these resources are information and some of these resources are classroom tools and tips. Having a PLN would allow students to also have access to these resources and to also collaborate with their own peers, teachers, etc. It is never too early to start a PLN. It is a very important tool that can help in so many ways, and its most likely free!

Computing in the cloud, by Doug Johnson

Summary
This article is about leaving programs like Microsoft behind and beginning to use purely free internet sources. The idea of free web based resources is called "the cloud", it is somewhere out in the technology world and everything just floats there until you call it back to your computer. The idea of using googledocs or adobe photoshop rather than having to buy and update the expensive microsoft and other expensive programs. The article talked about how easy and most likely incoming this idea is for students in the classroom. I think it is a great idea, but in a few years.

Question 1
How could i benefit from using the idea of computing in the cloud within my classroom?
If I used the idea of "computing in the cloud" in my classroom then I would be able to teach my students about safe internet practice, assign homework that could be complete at home, and create projects that could be worked on in and out of classroom. Like the article said it is so important that students of all grade be able to work on projects, papers, ideas, etc while at home and or school and then be able to transport them without actually having the responsibility or threat of losing them via thumb-drive or hard drive crash.

Question 2
What are possible down-sides if any?
One definitely could be the possibility of losing the file or not storing it properly, causing it to be gone and unsaved somewhere in the cloud. Second, if students forgot their passwords they could lose access to their work. Third, if parents know their students' passwords or if teacher do there may be an invasion of privacy. Fourth students may use the cloud for inappropriate things. And lastly, it may not be accessible to everyone outside of the classroom, and if so it cannot be mandatory. Although all of these are fixable through back up files, stored passwords with students permission, and adequate monitoring the idea of "the cloud" leaves many people skeptical. I personally am a little apprehensive about relying completely on technology and trusting that all my work will be private and secure.

School 2.0 Reflection Tool NETS-T 4

NETS-T that i chose to reflect on: Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments
The Question that I was prompted with a resource was  I provide students with multiple and varied opportunities to demonstrate their learning, and I make data-based decisions to customize and adapt future learning opportunities aligned with content and technology standards. I said that I did this moderately but had room for improvement and as a resource I was given two different choices. I chose the first one which was a journal article by Ruth Reynard titled; 21st Century Teaching and Learning: Assessing New Knowledge. I chose this article because I am interested on how we are going to teach our students about technology and team work, networking, and communication using the new electronic tools we are given while simultaneously "teaching to the test". I think it is so important that as students we are being taught to use technology and all of its wonderful resources to have the ability to network and learn so much from other people we haven't had access to before. If teachers are always teaching to the test I do not understand how we are going to continue teaching the younger generation how to appropriately and adequately use technology as the helpful tool it is. Some of the important aspects of education are thinking, interaction, collaboration, communication, application: All represent areas of process. but the article says that teachers not only need to focus on the outcome of these processes but also the method. The author goes on to talk about different ways to address the assessment of ideas using technology which is what I was initially interested in. Focusing on the process of getting to an end result, finding ways for the students to show their process, calculations, innovations etc. Then I got to a part in the article where she talked about how this process may not work for all your students. She said that there must be a balance that will favor each style. I loved this because many of the classes I am in now have several on-line components and it really stresses me out although I have been raised with technology. Some of the authors ideas for capturing concepts were combination of Online and hardcopy text resources (articles, papers, textbook etc.); Online discussion topics, blogs, or wikis; In-class group work; and In-class and online project work and new knowledge work.

Nets-T standard 5:
Engage in Professional Growth and Leadership. It will allow students to participate in local and global learning communities (a).  The students will participate in global conferences with other students from around the world.

Summary:
This article is about exploring the world through technology without having to leave the classroom. The article mentions viewing museums and having conferences with other students around the world. The global conference is 12 hour window frames where students can present live to each other, have interactive quizzes, reading, and presentations.

How could I organize this for all grades at my school?

Many schools do mock trials and other collaborative events within the school. If I could organize this for my school so students could practice and compete on a local level and then take their experience to the global conference.

How could I encourage my students to actively participate using other forms of technology?

As a teacher I could encourage my students to work in groups and communicate through twitter and blogs. I could also invite my students to use electronic sources to find their information and create power-points. When the presentations get nearer I could have the students practice their presentations, do blog summaries, and create websites that could be seen by other students around the world. I think it could be interesting if the students at the conference were known in advance then the other students could be introduced to my student’s topics and vice versa before the presentations so we could practice and prepare discussions and questions.

Standard
This fulfills the NETS-T standard 3. The student and parent will be able to colloborate with other student, peers, teacher and parents using digital tools and resources. Through the digital tools and resources the teacher, students, and parents success will be supported.

 Summary
Both the journal articles in journal 2 are about building your "PLN" professional learning network, through twitter. The articles talk about how to go on twitter and begin to build your PLN by searching people, subjects and ideas you are interested it. It also talked about how to organize your twitter to best support your goals of using twitter. The article also talked about using hash tags ( #) to find people or groups you may be interested in.

How could I organize a Twitter hash tag for my students' parents?

If I could help my students set up twitter accounts and learn/create a single hash tag for our class then much like this class it could be somewhere that the students' parents could go independently to view assignments and upcoming events in class. This is something I wish my little brothers' teachers had for his high school classes. My brother was horrible at following through or "remembering" that he had an assignment due in high school. It lead to a lot of late nights helping him with homework. If I could create a place where parents could electronically sign on, view assignments, upcoming events, and ask me questions I think it would create better communication by excluding the student being in the middle.

How could I use twitter for my students to form study groups and complete group assignments?

Twitter could help group assignments because it could help the group organize and make decisions prior to meeting. A lot of time in group work i feel that there is a lot of time wasted on talking about the project rather than doing it when the group actually comes together. By using hash tags and twitter the groups could go on their hash tags and talk about topics and other ideas they need to come up with. They could have a central place with an archive of their ideas, meeting times, and each persons' responsibilities. I think group work through twitter and the use of hash tags could get rid of a lot of time wasted communicating or "not knowing" what time events are and also not knowing what each persons responsibilities are.

Standard
I believe that this fulfills NETS-T standard 4 b. If there were one to one laptops for students then all the students would have the ability to use learner-centered strategies in the classroom. THe students would all have equal access to digital tools and resources

 Summary

The first journal is “Taking laptops school wide: a professional learning community approach” by Tim Green, Loretta Donovan, and Kim Bass. The article talks about the four tools to integrating technology successfully into the classrooms which are first progression of use, second school climate, third communication and fourth collaboration.

What kind of programs could I integrate into the classroom?

I always think math is such an important subject for children to feel confident in and if parents were able to see the exact types of problems their children were having problems with or if the children were able to get immediate feedback as to how they did the problem wrong and the correct way or a correct example then I think that would be very beneficial. Also by doing it through the computer it may be quicker feedback to me as the teacher.

How could I help the students’ parents benefit from this?

I think parents could benefit from the above programs if there was a way for the parents to also see their childs performance in the classroom so they could easily see where the child needed extra help outside of the home. Also I think parents would appreciate the ability to check notes from the teacher and assignments all posted online through a blog. If children posted on it during school and parents later had access to it through their own computers I think it could make communication between parent, child, and teacher much easier.

Introducing Ms. Blogger Jordann Tanner NETS-T 1

Hello Everyone,
My name is Jordann Tanner. I am a Southern California girl born and raised in Vista. I am 22 years old and have lived in the same house since I was one year old. I went to kindergarten through elementary school at Monte Vista Elementary, middle school at Lincoln Middle, and high school at Rancho Buena Vista. I completed three semesters of college at the University of Redlands in San Bernardino, then moved back home. I lost almost all my credits transferring from a private university to a public but I was able to take 21 units in the spring at Palomar to get a head start. I am now doing my third year at CSUSM and hoping to graduate in the spring with my degree in liberal studies, my depth in psychology and my certificate in communicative sciences and disorders which are the prerequisites for the speech masters program CSUSM just recently added this fall.

In the technology continuum I am definitely not "tech savvy". I can work my computer; the internet, Microsoft word and I passed the CCR, but goodness that was lucky. Compared to a lot of my peers I am quite far behind. My parents are not technical people and so everything I know I've either stumbled on accidentally or learned from a friend. I would love to learn more tricks and short cuts with technology and I am already so amazed at how much I learned last night in the first class. I have never used a Mac and have only been exposed to PC's but possible after this course I may be converted to the Mac world. As far as technology goes in the world I think it is a great tool for people. Of course there are going to be downfalls and people that use it for inappropriate things or find ways to use it to harm people but overall i think it is a great tool. I know for my personally my grandparents live in Idaho so they are able to check my family's and cousin's blogs to look at pictures and our posts about what they are missing out on. They don't know how to comment or create their own blog but at least they can view everything. But yes, I like the whole technology thing although many aspects of its complexity and size scare me to death. I cannot wait to learn more so I can feel more comfortable using the computer and internet.

The CSUSM mission statement is something that I have learned to become passionate about through my courses here at CSUSM. As a student in Southern California I am learning just how important it is to have educators that are committed to creating a place of learning that is equal, diverse, and socially just for all children and their parents. I also know how hard and scary it can be for students and their parents to be in public school system and I believe that CSUSM's mission statement is a strong example of how a lot of California schools need to change. Although, I admit I did not know the Mission Statement prior to applying, now that I am a student and planning to get my masters through the College of Education here at CSUSM, I will stand up for this mission statement firmly and place the same responsibility on my peers here at school and eventually in the workplace also.
