Journal 9 NETS-T 5

Cifuentes, L., Merchant, Z., & Vural, O.F. (2010). Save the world with web 2.0. Learning and Leading with Technology, 38(3), Retrieved from http://www.iste.org/learn/publications/learning-and-leading/digital-edition-november.aspx

Summary
This article addresses some of the benefits of using web 2.0 tools. Web 2.0 tools are new to this generation of students as ways of finding answers to just about anything. Web 2.0 tools allow students to find tools to either create their own web tool to find answers to their questions. The article talked about specific web 2.0 tools that are now available to students and talks about how these tools help students in and out of the classroom. It also talks about the importance of students using web 2.0 tools to have access to other people, places, and events in the world. Today, it is more important than ever that students are able to connect, communicate and compete on an international level. Web 2.0 tools allow them the access to do this in real time.
How could creating a class wiki as a web 2.0 tool help the classroom?
Creating a class wiki for my students would allow me to give the students a list of developed tools to create their own projects. Creating a class wiki would allow me as an instructor to see how they play out concepts to make sure they understanding the concepts. Also, by using a wiki it is a fun way to assess the students and or a fun way for them to spend extra time on the concept without them thinking they are doing time draining homework assignments. More than ever I think it is important to keep students interested in what they are learning and that they learn in ways that are supportive of their digital lifestyle.

How can I make sure web 2.0 sites are safe for my students?
One thing that scared me personally about the internet is safety. As a future educator either in the classroom or in speech therapy internet safety is very important to me. If I were to create an interactive wiki for my students to use then I would make sure that I checked out every website first. I would also ask for parental permission and or assistance when students used the wiki. I think it is important to use technology in the classroom and for students but it has to be safe.

Frey, T. J., Houlton, A. L., & Gruis, E. D. (2010). I can see me: webcams in the classroom. Learning and Leading with Technology, 38(3), Retrieved from http:///www.iste.org/LL

Summary
This article talks about the use of web cams in the classroom. This article discussed students reading into the web cam and then watching the videos of themselves reading. This seems like a great way for students to hear the mistakes they are reading. This is also a great way for students to read out loud without being nervous about messing up in front of their peers and teacher. Also, this is a great way for students to get evaluated and helped one student at a time.

How could this be beneficial to speech therapy students?
I am interested in going into the field of speech therapy. I think that using web cams would be a great way for students to hear the mistakes they are making. Also, if I could do the session with them then they would be able to have a correct example as well as their own. Also, with the video those students who had problems with physical errors then they may be able to see where they are actually making the mistake.

How could parents get involved using web cams?
Parents could take a very important role in the use of web cams with their students. If parents were able to assist their students at home using this web cam reading method at home, it would be great practice for the children. Parents could help the children recognize their mistakes and also recognize their successes. If parents were able to take the time and practice with their children that extra help outside the classroom could make a huge change in the child's level of confidence. There are so many shy children who would appreciate the help at home in a place where they feel comfortable and not threatened by other children.

Wiki Page NETS-T 3

CrappyGraphs - CSUSM Web 2.0 Tools for Educators

This is a wiki page that discusses web 2.0 tools. The specific wiki I created described a tool called "crappygraphs" a tool that helps to create line and venn diagram graphs. This wiki has a wealth of other tools available to look at examples and links to websites. Most are free also!

Inspiration NETS-T 3

This is my NETS-T Inspiration map. This is a digital and visual representation of the 5 net standards for teachers and my interpretation. The text under each subtopic represents parts of the standards that are images. With each image I chose an activity I have done that meets this standard. As a finished product I have a visual map of all the activities i have done and which standard it meets.
